Flashback to 04,
it's a different time then
Fresh outta high school,
excited to make noise and chime in
With a hella vibe in, utilizing my pen
Mustered up enough courage
to put out a project
I did it out of order, on a home recorder
Most of the beats by myself,
C
D
of course Mr. Bourne's out
Cuz the supply was shorter,
mama was a hoarder
Plus she had this drinking problem,
me and papa were not talking fast
So much grief about him,
she ain't wanna speak about him
I'm just trying to get to the bottom
and really see the problem
I wanna rally with you,
wanna be part of the solution
But I can't until I first deal
C
with my daddy issues
D
Mama laid everything down,
daddy was out of the picture
C
Then I learned he was really cropped out,
D
and gravity hit ya
Home life messy,
cause things ain't what they seem
Unable to sleep,
these are my insomniac dreams
They keep waiting for me to black out
C
D
They keep waiting for me to pass out
They keep waiting for me
to lash out and spaz out
Cause that's how they count
when I'm the last out
I just might, I just might, oh yeah
I just might now, I just might,
I just might, oh yeah I just might.

Same month I met my wife,
my best friend died.
Big Mike so full of life.
Pneumonia was a surprise.
20, too young to die.
I was too late to say goodbye.
On my way to the hospital
with every damn obstacle.
Would've thought that would've
taught me about being late.
Cause just a few weeks ago
he was feeling great.
And I don't know if it's
the best time to go.
On days of teen eulogy
believing anything is possible.
Even when it's not logical.
Even when the reason for you breathing
and I breathing isn't optical.
Illusions of control,
it's very abusive to my soul
Especially trying to figure this out
at 19 years old
Almost dropped out of college,
I'm glad that I didn't
Cause who knows where I would be
today had I not listened
To the people who had told me
life ain't always what it seems
Unable to sleep,
these are my insomniac dreams
They keep waiting for me to black out
C
D
They keep waiting for me to pass out
They keep waiting for me to lash
out and spaz out
Cause that's how they count
when I'm the last out
I just might, I just might,
oh yeah, I just might now
I'm a night owl
Am
who's repeatedly tried now
D
to become a morning person
Well, it isn't working
I want that morning purpose,
that early Folgers coffee
Watching the sun rise from my balcony
Am
D
Is losing a few hours of sleep
really worth it?
And it's instant coffee really
the best part of waking up
Am
D
because I don't even like coffee
So I spend my nights
chasing my dreams
C
wishing I could be a morning person
D
be cause it's important to dream
Perhaps more important than sleep
But I am not certain and I do know
that Martin Luther did have a dream
to see those liberated from
Am
the oppression of religion
D
Which bled into another King
another dream to see equality in society
and the dismantlement of Jim Crow
But that's another thing,
another king,
the king of pop died chasing
dreams
Overworked, overwhelmed,
and exhausted,
he paid to get sleep
A relief from that sleep deprivation,
but under general anesthesia
C
D
you can't experience REM
The king couldn't dream,
Am
and died in the process and chasing dreams.
